Calling all homeschoolers, remote schoolers, public schoolers, private schoolers who play brass, woodwind, or percussion instruments (or would like to learn) and would like to be involved in a band and enjoy playing with other local students! Our students also have the opportunity to audition for Olympic Conference Honors Band.
All student groups perform 2 concerts per year.
Many of our students start out on recorder. This makes transitioning to a band instrument much easier, since they will have already learned how to read basic music and all about tonguing and breath support.
In beginner band, we teach: flute, clarinet, oboe, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and percussion. Once students can play the beginning notes, they move up to cadet band for a few years until they are ready for our concert band. Unfortunately, we do not give lessons on piano, strings, vocals, or guitar, but we have many excellent recommendations if those are the instruments you need. (Bass guitar players are welcome in concert band tho.) For strings, click here:SJ Youth Orchestra
If you are a parent who plays a band instrument and would like to play along in your child's group, you are also welcome!
South Jersey Homeschool Band is a successful band program that has existed since 1998.
We have FOUR programs for 2025-26:
Recorder (beginner students in grades 2-5)
Beginner Band (for students brand new to a band instrument in grade 4-12; parent must rent or purchase instrument; no experience needed)
Cadet Band (band instrument students in grade 4-8 with at least 1 yr experience - must be able to produce a sound on the instrument and read the first five notes)
Concert Band (high school students and those who are capable of playing at this level)
Rehearsals take place MONDAY afternoons at Fellowship United Methodist Church, 704 Garden Street, Haddon Heights, NJ.
Ms. Amy Patton Weckesser ("Miss Amy") directs concert band and Mrs. Bethany Harshaw Bantle ("Miss Bethany") directs the cadet band and recorder classes. Mrs. Kathy Colletti directs beginner band and recorder classes. Click here to read their bios.
